ENT (General Practitioners' Department)
The field of ENT deals with diseases of the ear, nose and paranasal sinus, the oral cavity, the lymphatic ring, the salivary gland, the larynx and the lymphatic nodes of the neck. In our hospitals, these diseases are treated conservatively (without surgical intervention) as well as by operation according to our range of services.
Within the framework of diagnosis, the functional diagnosis of ear diseases (hearing and vertigo diagnosis) as well as the endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract play a significant role. The treatment is carried out on the basis of the result of the examinations and the course of the illness: the conservative treatment primarily covers such diseases as sudden loss of hearing or vertigo syndrome. But, inflammatory diseases in the entire ENT area can be treated conservatively in parts, whereby the transitions to surgical treatment are fluid.
The surgical therapy comprises the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinus and of shape changes of the inner nose. As a rule interventions are carried out endoscopically through the nostrils.
Another important surgical field are the interventions on the lymphatic ring, such as the removal of the tonsils pharyngeal tonsils. Frequently an enlargement of the pharyngeal tonsils is associated with a disease of the middle ear so that at the same time a drainage (tympanotomy, introduction of a tube) is placed to improve hearing.
Opening of accumulations of pus, the removal of skin and mucous membrane changes in the ENT area, smaller interventions on the salivary glands (such as the removal of salivary calculi or salivary duct slits) as well as the correction of sticking out external ears complete our range.
In most surgical interventions in the ENT area, the stay in hospital is short (two to six days). Under certain conditions, interventions may also be carried out in the out-patient department.
Radiology
The radiological department takes a significant position within diagnosis. It is an important link to all departments of our hospitals as well as to general practitioners. Radiology deals with the examination of the entire body by means of X-ray and ultrasound. In some cases radiopaque media are used to render prominent certain structures.
By means of a computer tomograph, the hospital in Sonneberg can be produce tomograms of defined areas of the body which contribute significantly to the diagnosis in oncological and neurological respects.
Highly modern appliances keep the radiation load as low as possible for the patients and ensure a high degree of safety. In our hospitals, the entire radiological departments have been digitalised, which means that the images are produced, processed and archived digitally. The digital technique of producing and reproducing images permits permits the image size to be changed, the contrast to be modified or unnecesarry details for diagnosis to be removed. By means of a two- and three-dimensional reconstruction of the image, functions can also be assessed qualitatively, clinical matters can be explained faster and treatment can be carried out more swiftly.
Digitalised X-ray pictures can be transmitted by telematic means and can be archived by image storage means. For this reason, our two hospitals are linked by a ring network so that images can be called off immediately at every doctor's workplace in Sonneberg and Neuhaus by computer.
The practice of an independently established radiologist is associated with our hospital in Sonneberg, in which examinations can be carried out by magnet resonance imaging (MRI) without radiation load for the patient.
Central Laboratory
A clear medical diagnosis is the prerequisite for successful therapy. Apart from the anamnesis, the medical examination and the imaging procedures, modern laboratory diagnosis provides an indispensable, often decisive contribution in the diagnostic process.
The field of laboratory diagnostics has undergone terrific development in the last few years. Laboratory examinations are essential means to check the therapeutical course for prophylaxis or assessment of risk factors. Highly modern techniques permit the precise determination of parameters, which were inconceivable some years ago. Apart from the qualitatively new and continuously developing possibilities, the exactness and high precision in the production of the measured values have reached a new quality ensuring a very high reliability of laboratory results.
The services of our laboratory comprise the field of clinical chemistry in general, haematology, immunology and the analysis of blood clotting and proteins. The field of responsibility of the laboratory includes also medicine and drug identification as well as the provision of banked blood and the entire pre-infusion diagnosis.
Our laboratory equipment meets the latest clinical chemical as well as scientific requirements in every respect; fully mechanised, highly precise and very powerful appliance systems represent the high technical standard.
Qualified staff is willing to apply the advantages of this technology in routine and emergency around the clock. Our staff members are working for you at night, at the weekend and on public holidays.
Our laboratory is open for out-patients as well, and renders services for independently-established doctors in the laboratory community of Sonneberg.
Hospital Pharmacy
In addition to a public pharmacy which is open to everybody, a hospital pharmacy supplies patients who are treated in hospital.
The hospital pharmacy in Sonneberg supplies our hospitals in Sonneberg and Neuhaus as well as other hospitals and sanatoriums in the region.
In Sonneberg and Neuhaus, the medicine is provided by means of an automatic unit-dose dispenser. The dispenser provides the medicine needed for each patient in a special bowl, which is closed up with a label, which, among other things, states the name of the patient, the medicine and the taking instructions. Every administration made by machine is once again checked for completeness by our pharmaceutical staff.
Our central production of cytostatic agents is another priority. In a room especially equipped for these activities, the special drugs for patients suffering from cancer are produced and prepared under aseptic conditions. By a high safety standard, an unnecessary risk of patients and staff is avoided.
As another pharmaceutical service, we produce a lot of medicine ourselves, which is otherwise not offered by the industry or which we can produce less expensively. These medicines are primarily liquid medicines, teas, salves or creams.
The logistics require a high degree of work and include the storage of over 1,000 drugs, medicine and medical products, their purchase, the ordering, the dispensing, the outgoing record and material accounting.
Physiotherapy
The term "physiotherapy" summarises the measures taken to influence the function of the organism by physical intervention. The desire to conserve or restore people's health by natural measures and methods is growing from year to year.
After medical diagnostic clarification of your illness, a large number of physiotherapeutical options is available to positively influence your health problem or your recovery. In this respect your will and co-operation are the most important prerequisites dor a successful therapy.
Please find below some examples of our range of treatments:
Physiotherapy (such as body exercises, gait exercises, training in the use of prostheses, respiratory therapy, gymnastic spondylotherapy)
Massages (such as classical massage, cervical extension massage, massage of the connective tissue, manual lymphatic drainage, foot reflex zone massage)
Extensions (according to the Glisson and Perl method, extension bed for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and hip)
Thermotherapy (red light and fango packs)
Hydrotherapy (such as underwater massage and hydro-electric bath)
Low frequency therapy (such as stimulation current pain therapy, oedema therapy, combination of ultrasound and stimulation current therapy)
High frequency therapy (short wave, microwave and ultrasound)
Manual therapy
Oxygen multi-step therapy according to the Ardenne method
Medical magnetic field therapy
